ARE YOUR ETHICS PERFECTIONISM IN DISGUISE?
Are your perceptions of ethical business practices holding you back?
Could your ideas about ethics be influenced by unconscious 'good girl/ nice girl' conditioning that creates an environment where you appease others and seek an impossible standard of perfection to feel valued/ avoid criticism?
Are your perceptions of ethical business holding you back? Could these beliefs be shaped by hidden 'good girl/nice girl' conditioning, compelling you to appease and seek an impossible standard of perfection to feel valued and avoid possible criticism?
It's time for some introspection: could unconscious patriarchal conditioning be creating limitations that compel you to seek perfection over authenticity? We are having more conversations about ethical business practices in the online business space which is a good thing. Yet, among women, I've observed a recurring pattern - a blend of 'good girl/nice girl' expectations and perfectionism, that culminate in harsh judgments of self and others that restricts growth.
This unconscious need to avoid disapproval by being ‘nice’ and ‘good’ erodes authenticity and hinders growth. The 'good girl/ nice girl' stereotype is a patriarchal construct that has overtly and covertly taught girls to evolve into women who try to stay safe by playing small.
This (unconscious) mindset creates resentment, triggering a vicious cycle of envy and internal conflicts, as women often critique others who dare to break these invisible chains.
While a small fraction of micro/small business owners may engage in questionable practices, the majority do not. Often, what's labelled as 'wrong' is actually a reflection of a quality you’ve learnt to suppress due to fear and conditioning. In the words of Marianne Williamson, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. This is the patriarchy’s deepest fear too!
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie famously said, "We teach girls that they can have ambition, but not too much ... to be successful, but not too successful, or they'll threaten men." Isn't it telling that the discourse women are having about ethics seems riddled with restrictions? This my friends is by design! The patriarchy like most oppressive systems is designed to be internalised so that we unwittingly contribute to our own suppression!
I call time on this.
Enough is enough.
This constrained thinking leaves countless women entrepreneurs leaving money on the table and stifling the positive impact they can have on the world. The people who want to work with you do not seek perfection, they are seeking someone real, who can guide them through their challenges with authenticity.
Ironically, the perfectionism you believe shields you from judgement re-wounds the vulnerable parts of you, teaching you that your true self is not good enough. This self-imposed cage not only restricts you and plays into patriarchal ideology, it stunts the success you work so hard to create.
It doesn't have to be this way.
It's time to liberate yourself from toxic conditioning and be the badass business woman you are.
Your perspective on ethics can empower your growth. When you venture beyond the 'good girl/nice girl' conditioning, your ethics can underpin your work, set excellence standards, and enhance your bottom line.
Transitioning from 'good girl' conditioning to bold woman beliefs will liberate you from unconsciously using ethics for external validation. This shift creates authentic and empathetic ethics, empowering you to pursue your true calling.
It’s time for courageous transformation. I’m inviting you to work with the power of your imagination to ask powerful questions of yourself and others so you can prioritise valiant progression over unconscious patriarchal conditioning.
Together we can reimagine what it means to thrive so that you create personal ethics that work with this goal rather than against, too many highly skilled women are blocking their blessings by trying to be good. You are a change maker, the world needs your boldness!
Your socially conscious, values driven businesses can be a powerful force for good, the world we live in puts enough limits on women, don’t put them on yourself!
Let your personal ethics go beyond societal boundaries. The world doesn't just need 'good' from you; it needs your brilliance.
